technical team

As a Fuel Cell Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of the energy transition, developing the alternative propulsion systems of the future. Your work centres on the heart of our propulsion system: the methanol fuel cell. You will model, develop and test the components needed to propel our boat to peak performance in a sustainable way. But we go beyond just sailing; you will also research groundbreaking technologies, such as an on-board carbon capture unit. This allows us to capture CO2 that can be reused for the production of new methanol, making our system completely climate-neutral. Together with the team, you will ensure the seamless integration of these complex systems. You will balance maximum efficiency, safety and performance under demanding conditions at sea. It is a role in which in-depth thermodynamics and systems integration come together to make a tangible impact on the maritime industry.

As an Electrical Engineer at Surge Twente, you’ll bring our boat to life by translating complex electronics into a working system. Within the Electrical team, you will be responsible for the entire electrical architecture. You will work on high-voltage systems and ensure the safe integration of the battery pack. It is an interdisciplinary challenge where you will focus not only on power, but also on maximum efficiency and the safety of the pilot. From the initial schematic to the final implementation in the boat: you keep the system running. We go beyond just theory. You will design your own PCBs, solder the components and test the systems extensively in our workshop. You will have the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art battery storage systems and complex sensors. You will work closely with the other sub-teams to ensure that the control of the motor and the hydrofoils runs seamlessly.
  • System Architecture: You will design and maintain the entire electrical infrastructure, including complex high-voltage systems.
  • PCB Design: You will design, assemble and test your own printed circuit boards (PCBs) for specific applications on the boat.
  • Energy Storage: You will build and implement advanced battery systems that are crucial to our green energy solutions.
  • System Integration: You will ensure a safe and efficient connection between the power sources, the electronics and the pilot.

Are you passionate about code, innovation and complex systems? As a Software Engineer at Surge Twente, you’ll ensure that all parts of the boat communicate seamlessly with one another. As part of the software team, you’ll help build the boat’s foundation. You’ll have the creative freedom to improve the architecture and integrate new features that take performance to the next level. From optimising critical safety systems to managing the server structure: you’ll ensure a robust and scalable platform that can withstand the challenges on the water. Your work doesn’t stop at programming alone. During test days and races, you’ll be part of the command centre. Here, you’ll maintain communication with the pilot and work closely with the strategist. By analysing live data, you help make decisions that directly influence the course of the race. You are the indispensable link in a multidisciplinary team.

Are you passionate about sensors, algorithms and real-time control? As a Control Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the ‘brain’ behind the boat’s flight, keeping everything under control at high speeds. Extreme precision is required to keep the boat flying stably above the water. You will design the systems that rapidly translate data from sensors across the boat into the correct actions for the motors and wings. The goal for the coming year? To develop a completely new, decoupled control system that flawlessly manages the complex dynamics of our latest boat. You will also expand our current boat simulations to improve predictive models and test them extensively. During test days and races, you will be in the ‘command centre’, where you will analyse the system dynamics and make live adjustments where necessary. It is the ultimate combination of theoretical control engineering and practical application on the water.
  • Controller Design: You’ll design and implement advanced algorithms to ensure the boat foils stably.
  • State Estimation: You integrate new sensor arrays to determine exactly how the boat is behaving in real time.
  • Predictive Modelling: You refine simulations to predict the boat’s behaviour under all conditions.
  • Mission Control: You analyse data whilst sailing and optimise performance to the very limit.

Is flying just for birds? We know better. As a Hydrofoils engineer, you’ll ensure our methanol-powered boat glides smoothly and efficiently above the water. Our team brings together hydrodynamics, control engineering and mechanical design. Using advanced CFD simulations, we optimise the wings for minimal drag and maximum lift. To make these designs feather-light yet strong, we work with high-end composites, such as carbon fibre. What makes us unique? We carry out the entire production process for these carbon fibre components in our own workshop. In addition to the wings, we design the complex mechanisms that control the boat’s height and rotation. By adjusting the angle of the wings whilst sailing, you keep the boat under control. You’ll be working with state-of-the-art materials and collaborating closely with industry partners.
  • Flow analysis: You will carry out advanced simulations to maximise the efficiency of our wings.
  • System design: You will design the complex mechanisms that adjust the angle of the wings for optimal control.
  • Composite manufacturing: You will become an expert in manufacturing high-quality carbon fibre components in our in-house workshop.
communication team

As Education Coordinator, you are our ambassador to the next generation. Your aim is to inspire young people to take an interest in technology and sustainability by bringing our innovations to life. You will lead our educational outreach projects and boost community engagement. By organising interactive workshops, school presentations and events, you will translate our complex technology into a story that is both accessible and inspiring.
  • Community engagement: You will build relationships with educational institutions and community organisations.
  • Workshop Development: You will design programmes to introduce schoolchildren and students to green energy and maritime technology.
  • Event Coordination: You will be the face of the team at open days and educational fairs, where you will communicate our mission to a wide audience.

As PR Coordinator, you will manage Surge Twente’s voice and reputation. In a year in which we are launching a new brand identity, you will play a crucial role in shaping how the outside world perceives us. You will position the team as a leader in the maritime revolution and ensure maximum media coverage. You will maintain contacts with the press, write engaging content and ensure that our story – from technical breakthroughs to race victories – reaches the right audience.
  • Brand Management: You will oversee and roll out the new brand identity across all communication channels.
  • Media & Press: You will write press releases, manage interviews and act as a spokesperson for the national and international media.
  • Storytelling: You will translate complex technical projects into inspiring stories for social media, the website and newsletters.
As a Graphic Designer, you are the visual brain of the team. You translate our technical innovations into powerful designs that capture the imagination. From the smallest details on social media to the impressive livery on the boat: you ensure that everything looks professional and consistent.
