Breaking barriers in the maritime industry
At Surge Twente, we are committed to the innovative application of sustainable energy in the maritime sector, specifically focusing on the implementation of methanol as a viable alternative fuel. The maritime sector faces a monumental challenge in lowering emissions, and we are here to accelerate the solution.

Surge Twente is a student team with students from both the University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Working in this multi-disciplinary team brings together innovation, collaboration and engineering to work towards one goal: building the first ever student-build methanol powered hydrofoiling boat. On May 7th 2026 we have revealed Eclipse to the world!

We believe the transition to sustainable energy sources is more than just a necessity; it is a unique opportunity for groundbreaking technological development. Our foundation focuses on the development of a methanol fuel cell system, and sharing our knowledge and experience with partners, students and the maritime community.

A pivot: from solar to methanol power
Surge Twente is built on a rich history. From 2016 to 2026, operating under the name Solar Boat Twente, we proved that solar-powered racing is a top-tier discipline. With a decade of experience in hull design, hydrofoils, and electronics, we are now taking the leap into the next phase of the energy transition: the Methanol Fuel Cell.
Core technologies
While our roots are in the water, we focus on four technological pillars to push the boundaries of what is possible not only in the maritime industry, but also on land and across other engineering disciplines:
Methanol Fuel Cell
We are developing a system that converts a water-methanol mixture into hydrogen to generate clean electricity. We are currently scaling from a 5 kW test setup to a full 20 kW system.
Carbon Capture
We are pioneering a circular loop by researching ways to capture CO_2 directly from our system, allowing it to be stored and eventually recycled into new methanol on shore.
High Voltage
Our expertise lies in managing high-power electronics, featuring a 380 V system, a 22 kWh battery, and a 30 kW motor designed for high-performance efficiency.
Hydrofoil Control
To achieve "flight" on the water, we utilize an advanced control system. This software ensures precision stability and can be adapted for various complex motion-control applications.
